Afghanistan: Caring for the internally displaced

Afghanistan: Caring for the internally displaced

Afghanistan has been devastated by both natural and man-made disasters, affecting thousands of people across the country.

In June 2016, the remote region of Badakhshan suffered a severe food shortage as a result of long-term food instability and climate change. FOCUS in conjunction with United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) was able to deliver food packages containing wheat flour, vegetable oil, pulses, salt and high-energy biscuits to the affected districts. The packages were enough to feed the whole affected population for two months. The food was delivered to Afghanistan from Tajikistan by boat across the Panj River, under a cross-border agreement between FOCUS and the Tajik Government.

In October 2016, over 5,000 Afghanis fled from Kunduz to Taloqan to escape continuing violence in the city of Kunduz. Within hours of the first internally displaced people arriving in Taloqan, FOCUS had provided support to 750 people in the form of 125 tents and 100 non-food item packages.
