India: Providing relief following severe monsoon flooding
Comments
In July, severe monsoon flooding paralyzed the state of Gujarat, wreaking havoc on a massive scale resulting in the displacement of up to 130,000 people. The effect of the monsoons was compounded as many dams overflowed due to the rising water levels.
Since the floods have subsided, FOCUS have deployed a Disaster Assessment and Response Team, a fully disciplined team of expert volunteers that undertakes assessments immediately after an emergency situation to help make an informed decisions about relief efforts. Since then, this team has assisted with the resettlement of local communities, continued to monitor monsoon alerts and supported the medical services to address post flooding epidemics.
